Topeka’s city government is not “going backwards,” city manager Brent Trout said Tuesday.

He took exception to comments Shawnee County Commission Chairman Kevin Cook made Monday that Trout thinks suggested that.

The city manager said that while “not everything’s been great in the past” for Topeka’s government,“We’re making good decisions now and I think that we have our house in order.”

Trout and Topeka Mayor Michelle De La Isla spoke about the importance of cooperation between the city and county governments during their monthly news conference held at City Hall, 215 S.E. 7th.

“I invite our friends across the street to just sit down with us whenever they need to,” De La Isla said Tuesday. ’I mean, we are here to collaborate. And in the end, we’re all working for the same thing. We’re all working to improve our communities.”
