It’s always a bit of a sore subject for residents of South Hutchinson who pride themselves as a standalone community from their larger neighbors to the north. But during last night’s Hutchinson City Council meeting, discussion came up again about the city approaching the small community across the river about consolidating services.

It’s a proposal that has never been popular with the small community. But as Councilman John Daveline put it Tuesday evening, things are a little different there at the moment. Mayor Steve Dechant said he would try to schedule a meeting with South Hutchinson Mayor Mandi Blumanhourst about whether the community might want to enter into some type of agreement for sharing services. The South Hutchinson City Council recently approved major cuts in staff, including the elimination of two police officers along with cuts in public works because of budget issues.
