Reno County Commissioner Dan Deming said he was pleasantly surprised by the number of people who expressed an opinion on whether the county should adopt a property nuisance code, and asked for time to draft a targeted ordinance for the full county commission to consider.
His fellow commissioners, however, were less than impressed and said Tuesday they had no interest in pursuing the issue any further, effectively killing the effort.
“You’re not tilting at windmills, but it’s pretty close in my mind,” Commissioner Bob Bush said of Deming’s effort. “I don’t have a problem looking at it, Dan, but it’s an uphill battle for you.”
A handwritten petition with the signatures of 17 residents in a subdivision southwest of Hutchinson sought some zoning to force a landowner at 7302 Zolman Road to clean up their property, which is overgrown in weeds and trees, housed two abandoned vehicles and a deteriorating mobile home and had multiple piles of trash.
