Around 40 people attended last week’s Haysville City Council meeting to express opposition to the idea of a tiny home development near Haysville or to support those expressing opposition.

Several speakers opposed the idea of a tiny home community for homeless people, many of whom presumably would come from Wichita or other surrounding areas.

Mayor Bruce Armstrong stressed at the meeting that while there are media reports about the idea of a tiny home committee, no plans have been presented to the City of Haysville. Armstrong noted at the meeting that the Haysville City Council would have no jurisdiction over a proposed development at Bergmann’s Corn Maze, which is outside of city limits near Meridian and 79th Street S.

Bergmann’s Corn Maze is currently for sale, with an asking price of $560,000. If able to raise the funds for the 78-acre field, Bob Johnson, founder of Let’s Rock & Roll and Change the Word, envisions a community of over 150 tiny homes, each with 200 to 400 square feet of floor space.

According to the Haysville Sun-Times, if there was a specific proposal, the Haysville Planning Commission would be responsible for considering it because the corn maze resides within the commission’s zone of influence. City planning commissions in Sedgwick County have a say in proposed development near their city limits.

Haysville resident Laura Adkins said she is working on a petition against any development and hopes to have it ready for the next Haysville City Council meeting.
