Last month, Vince Frye, president and CEO of Downtown Topeka Inc., revealed his vision for “active alleyways,” a concept to use the often overlooked space in between buildings.

The specific Topeka alleyway is the space between the historic Jayhawk Theatre and the future Iron Rail Brewery, behind the 700 block of S. Kansas Avenue.

Downtown Topeka Inc. and its partners have set an event date for Friday, Oct. 5, during the First Friday Art Walk, to host its “Activate the Alleyway” event, and are currently asking for artists to contribute to the beautification of the space.

“Right now we have about 15 artists, it could be a little bit more, and we’re asking them to paint 25-by-30 inch canvases that we’ll provide,” said Michelle Cuevas-Stubblefield, director of marketing and membership for DTI. “The theme is basically the vibrancy of downtown and what does that look like to an artist.”
