Eight picnic tables in two Forest Park shelters and two tables at Goppert Teen Park were replaced last week through a grant from the State of Kansas Health and Environment Department and matching funds, city officials said Tuesday.
The grant of $4,425 and matching funds of $2,985 were provided to partially fund the purchase of products made from waste tires. Nearly 3 million tires are generated as waste annually in Kansas, according to a city news release. The program is intended to stimulate the market for recycled rubber products rather than landfiling or other illegal disposal practices.
This is the third time the city has partnered with KDHE to enhance city parks with a goal to have all shelter amenities made of waste tire products as a part of the city’s Park Master Plan, city officials said.
