Atchison isn’t likely to see any significant flooding from the Missouri River as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers prepares to release more water downstream, the corps says.

Corps spokeswoman Eileen Williamson said Monday the Corps will increase, throughout July, water flowing through the Gavins Point Dam in stages up to about 50,000 cubic feet per second (cf/s).

“In Atchison, you’re looking at five to six days before that release affects your area,” said Williamson, deputy chief of public affairs for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Northwestern Division, based in Omaha, Nebraska. “It’s like watching a kink move down the hose.”
