The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is trying to keep people from returning to jail.

The sheriff’s office started a new program that helps inmates before they set foot out of jail. Sedgwick County Offender Re-Entry, or S.C.O.R.E., is a first-of-it’s kind program here meant to connect inmates with resources before they leave jail so they don’t come back. “Sixty percent of people come back in two years with new offences, so something has to be done to break that and the sheriff has looked at other jails and other larger cities with smaller jail populations and what they’re doing is programs,” said Captain Jared Schechter with Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.

Many organizations are partnering with the sheriff to help, so there is no direct cost to taxpayers.
