The city of Salina has a lot of capital improvement projects lined up for the next five years, commissioners learned at a study session before their regular meeting Monday.
How will they be funded?
“I think there’s an element of the community that would support a small increase in sales taxes,” Mayor Karl Ryan said.
Salina city sales taxes are on the low end, compared with other Kansas cities, City Manager Jason Gage said.
The combined sales tax is 8.75 percent in Salina, Abilene and Hays. On a list compiled by Gage, Junction City has the highest combined sales tax, at 9.75 percent. McPherson has a combined sales tax of 9 percent tax, Concordia 8.5 percent and Derby 8 percent.
The Salina rate does not include Community Improvement Districts, such as downtown, which will charge another 1 percent beginning in July 2019. The new Homewood Suites hotel being built at East Mulberry Street and Santa Fe Avenue is in two Community Improvement Districts and will charge an additional 2 percent beginning in October 2019, on top of the city transient guest tax.
