The city could be adding a new management level position – a deputy city manager – to its staff later this year.

The proposed job was included in the 2019 budget, which will need to be approved by the City Council.

City Manager Kathy Sexton said the addition is needed. Given the city’s continued growth, the time has come to increase management capacities, she said.

The new person would report directly to Sexton and supervise about half of the the departments.

Currently, 11 positions report directly to Sexton, which she said is “more than considered prudent or sustainable over a long time.”

Sexton said it is common in cities the size of Derby, which is just less than 25,000 residents, or larger to have a deputy or an assistant city manager. Some have both. Their responsibilities vary by city.
