Nearly a month after removing two black metal multipurpose units from the basketball courts at Sunset Park, a Salina Parks and Recreation crew began the process of reinstalling basketball goals. On May 17, city crews took down the basketball goals at the park and installed multipurpose units — a goal post with a basketball goal attached to it — with the intention of providing people who play futsol with better equipment while allowing basketball players a court as well.

Chris Cotten, director of Salina Parks and Recreation, said at that time, “There was never an intent to take away basketball at Sunset Park.”

Salinan Charles Bates Jr. began circulating a petition the next day, calling the units “unsafe and unwarranted.”
