U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke has designated the nature trail at the Fort Larned Historic Site as a national recreation trail.

The trail was among 19 trails in 17 states — and the only one in Kansas — receiving the designation this week, according to release from the agency.

On the grounds of Fort Larned National Historic Site, which is located six miles west of Larned on K-156, the 1.1-mile loop trail highlights both history and nature.

Fort Larned is located on the historic Santa Fe Trail and is also on the Central Flyway, a major bird migration corridor.
